How I Designed a 3 Season Porch to Feel Like Spring
January 26, 2021

Hello and welcome! Today I’m taking you behind the scenes into my design process to show you how I designed a 3 season porch to feel like spring.

My clients hired me to select all the finishes for their 3 season porch in addition to providing the furnishings and décor. When I asked how they wanted the space to feel, they said, “like spring!”

No problem! I love it when a client can tell me what they want.

3 SEASON PORCH MATERIALS AND FINISHES

I first started this project by looking at the client’s existing structure and the colors used there. This porch was going to be added on to the back of the house and so I had to keep the existing brick and trim color in mind.

The existing brick was a reddish color with some brown and the trim a very creamy yellow. We needed to carry the trim color throughout the porch walls so it would tie in with the house. I suggested the ceiling color be the same as the trim color but at 50%, which means mixing white with the creamy yellow 1:1. That way the ceiling would be white but not stark white.

The stone for the fireplace was chosen to complement the brick.

I selected a dark stain color for the beams that tied in with the brick and fireplace and also provided contrast on the ceiling.

I chose a very neutral, light-colored floor that would be a nice backdrop to all of the finishes plus the furnishings that I would be selecting. By the way, this is LVP, luxury vinyl plank flooring.

Selecting finishes can be overwhelming and time-consuming. That’s why I offer my Designer for a Day service for busy families who need that help.

FURNISHINGS & DÉCOR LIKE SPRING

One thing I kept in mind for this space was it needs to be family-friendly!

A room always starts with a floor plan. My clients wanted a place to relax in front of the TV as well as a place to have dinner or play games.

Having a rug creates a zone for relaxing and TV watching as well as anchors the sectional in that area. I selected a rug and pillows that complemented each other and were bright and colorful for spring.

Bonus: the rug is an indoor/outdoor rug so it will clean up easily!

BTW, if you want to know where I source a lot of my pillows, go here to Etsy. You can also shop my favorite pillows and rugs right here on my site.

The sectional is custom-made, and I used the owner’s existing sofa for measurements to give the sofa maker. By specifying a neutral performance fabric this piece will last a lifetime!

A round neutral ottoman made of leather will also stand the test of time and is a great place to put your feet up or serve as a coffee table.

Extra seating was added behind the sofa with a sofa bar so the kids could do homework or have a snack.

DINING & GAMES

I love to use a round dining table. Everyone can have a conversation with anyone at the table and it’s perfect for playing games. It’s also really easy to walk around when moving through a space. The table is actually an outdoor table with a teak base and concrete top.

Light, bright and airy!

These dining chairs are great! Look at that blue and white and the details!

As far as décor, I felt like the space didn’t need a lot of that. Artwork provided by Mother Nature herself! Thanks for reading how I designed a 3 season porch to feel like spring. I know it’s a long one!

Here’s what my client said:

"It looks so great and I feel like I’m on a little vacation when I’m out there!"
