Hello and thanks for stopping by. Today I would like to share what to consider when you design a kids bedroom that grows with them. This is week 3 of our One Room Challenge Tween Bedroom Makeover. This week I finished painting. Check out the color. I love this shade of turquoise. It’s very soft and light and feels refreshing.
PROGRESS PHOTOS
So, the plan was to use Billy bookcases from Ikea to create built-ins for this room. I’ve used these in other bedroom projects and they work well if you want a custom built-in look for a fraction of the cost.
Currently, IKEA stores are closed, and picking up is not an option at my local store. Lucky for me, I have a couple of friends who wanted to order some items and were able to split the shipping cost, which is $100. However, when I went to place my order online, it said my bookcases are out of stock for shipping. WHAT?!
FLOOR PLAN
After a mild panic, I adjusted our plans. Originally, I was going to used 2 – 31” wide bookcases, one on each side of the bed. I decided to use the 15” wide Billy bookcases and place two side-by-side on each side of the bed. I will document this process as we build and install them.
Here’s some even better news. When going to place the order, the option for expedited shipping from our local store for $49 came up! Yes, and thank you!! The built-ins will really transform the room!
Another decision we made is to buy my daughter a bigger bed. She’s 11 and growing, and she’s already 5’-1” tall. We might as well upgrade to a full size bed now. The room isn’t that big, and I feel like a queen bed would take up too much floor space.
Lucky for us, I found a full size bed by Pottery Barn someone in a nearby neighborhood was selling. It’s an off-white color with distressing. I’m thinking about painting it gray. I’ll keep you posted here too.
INSPIRATION BOARD
So, you see there are several things to consider when designing a room as well as how to deal with issues that arise. I’ve come up with a list to help you if you decide to tackle a kids bedroom project.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU DESIGN A KIDS BEDROOM THAT GROWS WITH THEM
- Size of bed – consider the size of the room, size of your child, how much floor space you want. Is your child growing out of the current bed? Do you need bunk beds?
- Storage – what do you need storage for? Toys, book, games, crafts, stuffed animals, dolls, clothing, & accessories are all items to consider. Bookcases are great because they use more vertical space & therefore less floor space. Use baskets to corral smaller items on the shelves.
- Lighting – do you have ample lighting and does your child like to read in bed or work at a desk? Is there too much light coming through a window? Do you need blackout drapes to help your child sleep at night?
- Layout – does your child like to sprawl out on the floor to play or sit on the bed? Do they need a desk for homework or crafts? Maybe they would like a comfy chair to sit and read.
- Color – what color does your child like? I like calming colors in a bedroom like blues, greens and purples, but don’t be afraid to use some punches of bold color to liven it up. Use what makes your kid happy.
If you are designing a bedroom for a child or teen, I would encourage you to talk to them about their needs and wants and include them in some of your design decisions. That way, they’ll love it even more!
Thanks for joining me today, and see you next week for more progress on our One Room Challenge Tween Bedroom Makeover.
