Switching out the hardware is one of the easiest and least expensive updates to make in a kitchen. It requires little to no experience. There are so many options available online and it’s so easy to have them shipped to your door. Think of the hardware as jewelry for your cabinets.
I have these cabinet pulls in my kitchen and love them.
I also love the look of these acrylic bar pulls!
TIP: Yes, you can mix metals! Even if you have stainless steel appliances and fixtures, feel free to use gold or black on your cabinet hardware and even your lighting!
It’s also ok to combine knobs and pulls in a kitchen. Just remember to measure for cabinet pulls or be prepared to patch some holes.
If you or someone at home is a little bit handy with tools you can accomplish these next tasks. Updating your pendant lights over the island will give your kitchen a whole new look! I like to go a little bigger than your standard pendant. It makes such a statement, and I always recommend this to my clients wanting to update their kitchen.
I am loving these pendant lanterns and open shelves in the home of photographer Lindsay Hart. Lighting is definitely the crowning jewel of your kitchen.
Updating your sink faucet may not sound fancy, but wait until you see some of the newer faucets out there. Some even have hands-free technology.
This type with the pull down sprayer is beautiful and very functional. If you have more than one hole in your countertop you can usually get a cover for them.
Adding glass to your cabinet doors might be a little more involved but I’ve found a fantastic DIY tutorial online for you if you think you want to try. I love to have at least one cabinet with glass doors in the kitchen to break up the monotony of the solid wood cabinet doors.
In this cabinet I store our everyday dishes, and the glass makes it easier to find something.
Toll BrothersI love how the glass cabinets flank the window in this kitchen by Toll Brothers.
I love the look of open shelving in the kitchen. This too breaks up the monotony of the cabinets and gives you a place to set more decorative bowls, pitchers or glassware. You can even keep your everyday dishes or serving bowls on a shelf. My advice is to limit how much you keep on any open shelves so they don’t look cluttered.

Studio McGee always does it right, and I love the combination of the floating wood shelves with a white kitchen. Placing sconces above the shelves is also a great idea.
If you’re up for a DIY, here’s a tutorial for installing shelves in the kitchen.
I also found this article for how to make your own open shelving. These are more of an industrial look. What are your thoughts on open shelves in the kitchen?
