What is the one thing I always say when starting a design project at home? Always have a plan. Why? It will save you time, headache, and many costly mistakes.
For example, let’s say you just moved into a new home and you need to purchase new living room furniture and accessories. Where do you start? Do you buy a sofa first or paint the walls that dreamy shade of blue you love? Do you purchase a living room set or try to mix and match to suit your style more?
So many decisions, right?
When I'm doing a design project for a client, I create a plan. While each project is different for each client, my process for creating their plan is the same. The end result is a completely furnished space that speaks to my client's style and the way they live.
Having a plan will save you time, money and headache along the way. How?
Let’s say you purchase a sofa at a retailer and have it delivered. It’s comfy and looks great in your new home.
Next, you find a beautiful rug that you like and have it delivered to your home. However, the colors aren’t working with the sofa and you’re not sure if you bought the right size. Do you return it or live with it?
Next, you decide you need a coffee table and some end tables for the room. You find an end table at HomeGoods for an excellent price and bring it home with you. While at HomeGoods, you see a chair that looks great and a piece of art that’s really pretty. Of course, you'll buy them too.
When you get home, you set the table next to the sofa, place the chair in the corner, and think, “hmm…” The table seems a little small next to the sofa and the chair is just okay. You have a piece of art that you love, but you’re not feeling confident enough to hang it on the wall behind the sofa.
By now, you’ve spent a lot of money and time trying to furnish your new living space and are feeling a bit exhausted. It seems so easy on HGTV, but it’s not working out that way for you, and now you’re not sure what to do.
Here’s a tip from me: it doesn’t work to piece-meal a room – meaning to make these one-at-a-time purchases without considering everything else that is going into the space.
The great news is that it works to have a plan, and that is why I have created these guidebooks for YOU! They'll teach you how to create a living room and bedroom that you'll love.
