This is the space in our home where our family hangs out the most. We play games, watch tv, and entertain guests. It’s perfect for entertaining because it’s open to the kitchen and dining areas. I love having a sectional in the family room because you can squeeze in a lot of people!
What to do with a flat screen tv? Add a shelf with art and accessories, and hang artwork to the side of the tv help to “hide” it. That way it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. You could also create a gallery wall around the tv. See how I did that here.
How do you decorate a large two-story room and keep it cozy? Imagine a ceiling for the first story, and make a plan for that. You can see an imaginary line where the drapery rods are hung in the photo below. Bring in drapes, pillows, and throw blankets. Baskets add texture and interest. Don’t forget artwork and accessories to add color and interest. Use items that you love and bring you joy. I love to use plants, even the faux kind. Greenery adds life to a room!
Don’t forget the power of paint! The main areas of the home are painted Anew Gray by Sherwin Williams. This accent wall is Warm Stone by Sherwin Williams. Another tip I have is to layer your window treatments. I like to use roman shades plus drapes when dressing a window. The look is clean but also softens the lines in the room, and these do a great job blocking the hot sun in the late afternoon. While I could have hung drapes from the second story windows, I chose to hang them high above the first story windows to create a more intimate feeling. To keep it consistent in the adjoining kitchen and breakfast area, I used the same drapes and roman shades for the french doors and kitchen sink window.
Thank you for taking the tour, and I hope you’ve learned some tips to use in your own home!
