What’s my style? I thought I would address that topic in today’s blog post and how to find your design style. With so many different home décor looks and trends, it can be overwhelming to decide the right one for you. My advice? Go with what you love.

I often advise my clients to look through Pinterest and pin all the home décor images they like and then decide what they like about them. Usually, there will be some consistency throughout the photos.
Even though there is a wide variety of style, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to just one. Many of my designs, including my own home incorporate a mix of styles. However, I will say that my base style is transitional.
Traditional – Think about wood furniture with intricate carved out detail, floral or striped fabrics, and heavy moldings. Kitchens will have raised panel cabinetry and more ornate light fixtures.
Contemporary – typically you’ll see streamlined, low to the ground furnishings, bold punches of color and defined shapes, especially curves
Mid-century Modern – this look originated in the 50s and 60s with walls made of glass and minimalistic design including deep olive green, orange and brown colors. I love this updated mid-century modern bedroom by Mix and Match Design.
Farmhouse – think Joanna Gaines! This laidback design style has been very popular and includes shiplap walls, vintage fabrics and a lot of black and white. I think of it as rustic elegance. Check out this beautiful modern farmhouse kitchen by Holly Mathis Interiors.
Industrial – typically seen in lofts or modern homes with a wide-open floor plan. You might see salvaged brick, painted ductwork, concrete, metal and raw materials.
Transitional is the bridge between traditional and contemporary. When I think transitional furnishings I think of Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel. This style typically has clean lines but also classic pieces. I love Tana’s home – clean and fresh, but totally livable.
You certainly can! In my home, you’ll see traditional moldings paired with furniture with clean lines though I like to keep my décor to a minimum, but that doesn’t make me a minimalist. I like clean lines but also comfort.
By mixing styles, I’m able to keep a room from feeling stale. That also makes it easier to switch out pieces from time to time when you want something new. After all, having some character in a space is what draws your attention like a contemporary styled dining room with a traditional buffet. Or a farmhouse kitchen with a modern breakfast table keeps it interesting.

Think about where you like to shop, the catalogs you would look through, what magazines interest you, and what style your are drawn to. Remember, go with what you love! Then think about how you can make it interesting by adding an element of a different style to it. Don’t just go with the latest trend, but what speaks to you. As a designer, I like to mix it up!
I’d love to hear in the comments what design style you are most drawn to and why!
