How do you like your dining room? I love a moody dining room. In fact, a modern transitional moody dining room is one of my favorite spaces to design.
I love dining room design because it’s an opportunity to go bold with color and create high contrast, make it glamorous or even just mix some different styles. It’s a chance to get really creative, which I love to do!
I’ve created two moody dining rooms paired with my modern transitional style for you to shop or simply get inspired. After all, fall is right around the corner and that is prime dining time.

MODERN TRANSITIONAL MOODY DINING ROOM
When you have a round table in a dining room you can fit a lot of people around it which is perfect for conversation or even playing games. I selected a blue buffet and a deep orange rug to complement each other. Everything else is pretty neutral while the gold chandelier and sconces add some bling.
I created this dining room using a few budget friendly pieces. Notice how I coordinated the blue chairs with the rug and the art? The charcoal gray wall and black buffet and lamps add depth and drama to this space.

TIPS TO CREATE A MOODY DINING ROOM
DARK OR MOODY COLORS
Think charcoal gray, slate blue, burnt orange and deep green. However, I like to mix the dark and moody colors with some lighter ones too and create contrast.
You can also use dark colors with wall paper or different painting techniques. Notice the subtle vertical stripes above. See more of this modern transitional dining room.
METALS
I love to add a little bling to my dining rooms with a sparkly chandelier or a pair of gold sconces on the wall. The choices are endless but will really bring some drama to the space.
TEXTURES
Think about patterned rugs, upholstered chairs, or velvet drapes. All of these will make your dining room feel extra cozy. Wood tones in some of your furnishings is also a great way to bring in a natural texture.
I love the high contrast and drama in this dining room by Yuni at Love Your Abode. She painted all of the walls and ceiling black, and it looks amazing! Notice how the textured elements such as the rug, vase and pendant light keep the room feeling cozy.
This dining room by designer Jane Lockhart is more traditional in style. Nevertheless, I love the high contrast and the sculpture of plates on the wall.
LIGHTING
Have more than one light source. Usually you’ll have a chandelier or some type of ceiling fixture. Add a couple of buffet lamps to your sideboard or a pair of sconces to the wall. Then, add a dimmer switch to adjust the lighting when you want to control the mood.
Designer Tip: don’t be afraid to swap out the white lampshade that came with your lamp. Try a textured linen shade in a neutral color or even a black one.
ART
Don’t forget this one! Your choice of art can make a big difference in your space. Choose something that speaks to you but is also fitting for your dining room. I love to use abstracts or landscapes in a dining room, but there is so much to choose from. Always go with what you like.
MIRRORS
I almost always use a mirror in a dining room. It’s like a piece of art but it also reflects the light in the room and makes the space appear larger.
Thanks for stopping by today. Tell me in the comments below how you like your dining room? Is it light and airy? Is it bold or dramatic? Or maybe you like a mix! And let me know how you like the modern traditional moody dining room designs and which is your favorite!
