ITEMS NEEDED
- Drapery panels – I like to use white. It’s clean and crisp and will work in any room, any style. I like these cotton drapes or these cotton blackout drapes
- Ribbon – I chose a 1.5” satin ribbon
- Stitch witchery (or other fusible bonding web)– this stuff works like magic. Use it to hem your drapes or pants too!
- Steam Iron – I could really use a new one. I think mine is about 100 years old, haha!
- Ironing board
- Scissors
- Level or straight-edged ruler
- Damp cloth
STEPS – NO SEW POTTERY BARN TEEN INSPIRED RIBBON DRAPES
Make sure your drapes and free of any lint
Decide where exactly you want the ribbon to lie on your drape. I recommend 2”-3” from the edge.
Lay the drape flat on your ironing board. I left my board flat on the floor and laid the drape over it.
I used my level as a spacer for the ribbon. That kept it nice and straight.
Starting at the top I worked in 1’ sections and placed two rows of the bonding tape on top of the drape. Then I would carefully roll out the ribbon on top of that next to the level.
You want to have a damp cloth on hand because you’re going to place that over the ribbon and then place your steam iron on top of that for several seconds. Follow the directions on the Stitch Witchery package. You don’t “iron” like you normally would an article of clothing.
Continue to move the level along the edge of the drape and cut more 1’ pieces of the bonding tape. Roll out the ribbon on top of that and repeat the process of the damp cloth and iron until you reach the end. Note: you will repeat the process of pressing the underside of the drape with a damp cloth and iron.
Note: leave an extra few inches of ribbon at the top and bottom of your fabric so you can fold it over and complete the process on the underside. It looks more professional that way. You can see in the shot above that I used this same process to hem the drapes.
