Three Must-Haves For Your Next Remodeling Project
Oct 12, 2022

Do you ever walk into your home and don’t like the feel or look? My clients will say, “something feels disconnected.” A home should reflect who you are and what you like. If you’re ready to make significant changes, stay tuned because I’ll share the three must-haves for your next remodeling project.

Remodeling project emotions

I like to compare renovations to having a baby. It’s something new that will bring many changes in your life, joy, and excitement. It’s an incredible experience to embark on, and it challenges you in ways you never imagined, but simultaneously, the fulfillment of something that you’ve wanted for a long time. At the same time, your renovation can make you feel tired and anxious because of the time it takes to nail everything down; you may also experience uncertainty, tiredness, and anxiety when some things go beyond your control.

That is why I always recommend my clients hiring a designer to guide you through your renovation. A designer can help you navigate all these emotions, make the right decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and create an exciting experience. If you’re ready to remodel your space today, book a call with me to guide you accordingly.

Three must haves for your next remodeling project

If you’re sure that a renovation is something you need right now, there are three things you need to start thinking about:

  1. Budget
  2. Time-frame
  3. Inspiration

Let's dive deep into each one.

Budget

A budget is essential to every remodeling project. Having a number in mind will help you get a general idea of how much you need to invest in your space.

Money is perhaps one of the trickiest things to plan because you don't know what things will cost and will underestimate. The most important thing when determining your budget is to be realistic. Setting real expectations will help you land an accurate estimate. If you’re uncertain about this step, talk to your contractor or designer, and let them guide you accordingly.

It’s also important to set some money aside because things happen in the real world, and sometimes plans don’t go as expected, so saving a little extra for items that may come will save you significant stress.

To help you get your project moving budget-wise, I recommend following these steps:

  1. Prioritize: What do you need vs. what do you want? Sometimes we get carried away, and we tend to put things on the list that we might not need right away. For example, if you want to spruce things up,  consider updating your lighting and cabinet hardware instead of installing everything new. Paint also helps create a whole new look with a lot less.
  2. Estimate: Now for the fun part. You can ask your designer, contractor, or friends. You can also research and present your numbers to your designer to see if your findings are accurate.
  3. Collect different bids: Research online or ask someone to refer you to at least three contractors. Don’t go with the lowest offer; instead, look for the value in each one.

Time frame

Another critical element of a remodeling project is time. And this is similar to budget because, as humans, we want everything done fast. However, there are certain things that you might want to consider when planning the time for your renovation.

  • Add a start and an end date. When would you like the project to be completed?
  • If you're remodeling two or more rooms, talk with your contractor and prioritize your needs.
  • There will be discomfort in a remodeling project, especially if it involves construction. I’m talking dust, noise, and people going back and forth, which can be stressful, especially if you have little ones around the house. Think about how you will handle this.
  • If there are any materials or products you need to order, consider shipping times and possible delays. The sooner you get started, the better!

Inspiration

Last but not least, the third must-have for your renovation project is to look for inspiration. A fun task that I love to assign to my clients. It's essential to know what design style matches your personality and lifestyle. Your design style includes all those elements that resonate with you—your preferences regarding colors, fabrics, and accessories. Your home should reflect who you are and what you like.

One source of inspiration can be Pinterest. Start by creating different boards, one with the furniture you love, another with décor, and the other with color palettes. Then, when we meet for our design consultation, I’ll consider your inspiration and design style and guide you accordingly on how to get started with your project.
