My friend, who is giving her living room a refresh, found a beautiful, neutral rug for her space, and she loves it! She had been living with her mother’s old area rug in that room, even though she didn’t really like it. Her mother passed away years ago, so the question is what to do with the old rug? To keep or not keep a sentimental rug?
Do you hang on to things for sentimental reasons even if it's not something you love, or do you toss them?
If you know me, you know I don’t hold on to things for sentimental value, at least very few items. When I’m done with something, it’s gone.
Have you read Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up? (one of my favs) She says to pick up the item and hold it, and if it doesn’t bring you joy, it needs to go. You can always sell or donate the item if you think someone else can use it.
Just because we get rid of an item that once belonged to a loved one doesn't mean that we no longer love that person.
I find that when we hold on to too many things in our home it creates clutter. Clutter in our homes creates clutter in our minds, which creates stress. Have you ever cleaned out a room in your home and felt so free afterward? It’s a great feeling, like a weight has been lifted from our shoulders.
I truly believe that when we let go of items that are no longer useful to us or we just don’t love them anymore that’s it’s ok to let go of them. Feel free to take a picture of it if you really want. A clutter free space means you have room to breathe.
This is why you’ll notice a very clean design aesthetic in the spaces I create for my clients. I want my clients to be able to relax and enjoy their space and not feel stressed.
So, what did my friend do with her mother’s old rug? She stored it in her attic for the time being. It was a very freeing experience for her, and she felt very relieved. See the old rug below.
Speaking of rugs, grab your free guide, “How to Choose a Rug for Your Space" below. You’ll find it very helpful since a rug can be a jumping off point for your room design. Get yours below! You can also shop some of my favorite rugs on my website.
