Let’s be honest: renovations can be stressful for homeowners, especially when they involve construction and your home’s technical aspects; it’s ideal to have the backup of a professional team you can count on to make the process less stressful and more enjoyable.
In today’s blog post, I share four tips for selecting the right contractor for your home renovation.
But before moving forward, if your renovation project involves a kitchen or bathroom, we have the right guide for you!
Our Kitchen & Bath Renovation Roadmap will help you plan, budget, and design your dream room.
I like to think of remodeling projects as a baby; while you may be excited about having a new addition to your family, adjusting can be overwhelming. Like long days and uncertainty, renovation projects can become stressful for homeowners if they don’t have the right tools and guidance to complete them. Plus, when unexpected situations happen,
having a team of experts to back you up is ideal for overcoming those challenges and creating a unique project that fits your lifestyle and needs.
For all these reasons, I like to think of contractors as designers' right-hand men. While a designer's job is to plan, supervise, and finish the design, the contractor will make the designer’s vision a reality.
Adding the right contractor is one of the first moves to making your dream renovation a reality, and here are four tips to help you select the best choice for your home:
Let’s explore each in detail.
With so much online information, finding an ideal contractor can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. But there’s one quick and easy way to guarantee you select the best professional for your project:
hire an interior designer.
Interior designers have professionals who work in their network, meet their standards, and ensure deliverability in time and budget. Their expertise will also bring your room to a whole new level.
Your designer will help you make the best choice based on your project’s scope and needs and will guide you on what to expect when you hire a contractor.
I always recommend that my clients research 3 to 4 different contractors so they can narrow down their options and make a decision more quickly. But it all comes down to having a clear goal that will help them make the right decision for their home.
Once you have selected the contractor options that suit your needs based on their experience with projects and if they’ve worked on similar projects before, it’s time to request an estimate.
At this point, you want have 2-3 estimates, and my recommendation here is not to decide based on the cost. Talk with your designer and evaluate the choices based on their services, timeline, experience, projects they’ve worked on, and any other information they can provide.
You’ll know you’re making the right choice by
having a designer’s experience and their input in your decision.
Depending on the room you’re trying to remodel, make sure your contractor has experience in similar projects. For example,
if you’re remodeling your kitchen, choose the contractor with the most expertise in that area. The ideal professionals will have a portfolio you can explore to see if it matches your likes and wants.
“Two minds think better than one." At An Inspiring Home, we provide our contractors with a specification book that acts as a specific roadmap with every design detail we’ve discussed with our clients. It’s a no-brainer for them and ensures everything goes according to plan. They love how it reduces misunderstandings and communication gaps.
For example, in our
Cozy Family Sanctuary Project, our client contacted us about furnishing their living room and renovating the primary bath before moving into their new home. This client was craving a professionally put-together look for a family with kids and pets.
Our solution included durable furnishings with performance fabrics, custom window treatments, and accessories that reminded this family of the coast. We also provided finish and material selections to their contractor for the bathroom.
Having a designer involved in your remodeling project helps you clearly define and prioritize what’s important to you. Do you want constant communication or progress reports and work notifications about your project? Do you prefer to deal with your contractors directly, or do you want someone else to do that for you? Having a clear idea of what you want can help narrow down your contractor's decision and approach to your project.
In our full-design services, we provide a complete journey. We take you from an initial consultation to a breathtaking big reveal. In between, we'll curate mood boards, present architectural drawings, acquire samples, place orders, and manage logistics.
