Lighting plays an important role in interior design, setting the tone for a positive, relaxing, and comfortable mood, especially in spaces designed for unwinding. In today’s blog post, I’m excited to take you behind the scenes in this project reveal to show how we transformed two dark, outdated rooms into light, bright, inviting spaces.
Get ready for all the details as I walk you through our design process and how we used our design approach to completely change these rooms!
Our client reached out to us to remodel
two key areas in their home: the primary bathroom and the basement.
The main issue with the bathroom was its outdated look. The shower was dark and cramped, and they weren’t fans of the Tuscan-style columns.
The basement felt dark and old, with an old carpet and elements that didn’t fit their needs. The family, especially the teens, wanted a cozy space for movie nights, a conversation area for games, and a pool table for entertainment.
During our design consultation, we quickly identified the key element to transforming both spaces: lighting. Creating light would modernize these rooms and bring them to life.
Now, let’s dive into the details of how we worked our design approach on this project!
First, we removed the columns and partial wall at the ceiling, allowing more natural light into the shower. We also added a freestanding tub with a marble accent wall behind it, adding a touch of luxury.
Another key ingredient was to add porcelain tiles for the floor and shower walls and marble tiles for the shower floor, with a stunning accent wall behind the tub. Taking the tile all the way up to the ceiling really elevates the space, don’t you think?
We also updated the vanities to resemble furniture, giving the space a more elegant feel.
As I always say,
renovations are not for the faint of heart. In this case, the placement of the tub fixtures was a challenge. The clients preferred not to have a freestanding faucet, as it didn’t fit their style. Our solution was to build a knee wall below the window to place the plumbing and mount the faucet there.
In the end, it was the finishing touches that made this design:
What began as a dark, outdated space has now become a bright oasis perfect for unwinding.

Our goal for this room was to create a cozy and functional space that reflected our clients' styles and memories.
The old carpet needed to go, so we replaced it with light neutral LVP flooring, which is perfect for a basement since it's very durable. Then, to brighten the look, we updated the theater's color to a deep, smoky blue and the rest of the walls to a warm, light neutral. These two colors combine and contrast perfectly and bring the spaces to life.
All the window treatments with blackout drapes have a soft, linen texture perfect for comfort and elegance. The lighting also got a refresh to increase the room's overall mood.
To make the fireplace a focal point, we designed a conversation area with swivel chairs and a coffee table where the family can gather for board games or simply relax. We even added a pool table, carefully selecting one that matched the room's style and color palette.
Some challenges also got in the way in this space. The mirror hanging near the fireplace arrived broken, so we selected a different one, and we love how it fits the space.
For the art, we selected a collection of photographic prints by a local artist from Long Island, our client’s hometown. The pieces add a personal touch to the space that makes it their own.
The result is a designed space that feels warm, inviting, and personalized for this family’s needs and wants.
