This family wanted to add a modern touch to their transitional style home. They like clean lines, modern art and furnishings yet enjoy feeling comfortable at home.
The home has a very open floor plan making it the perfect place for entertaining, so I had to ensure the design flowed from one room to the next.
When you enter the home you immediately notice a large piece of bold, modern art. This sets the tone for the main floor living areas. We repainted the main living areas of the home in Worldly Gray by Sherwin Williams. Then added bold pops of color to keep it exciting.
The console table and bench across from the art provide a place to sit. I love how the art is reflected in the mirror.
The key to a grand space with soaring ceilings is to style it to a human scale. Drapes are hung high above the window but not too high to emphasize the vertical. This formal yet family-friendly setting is the perfect spot to host a dinner party.
I can't decide which is my favorite - the statement art or statement chandelier. Notice the mix of metals in this space: the silver mirror, the antique bronze light fixture and window hardware, and the gold framed art and centerpiece bowl. Mixing metals keeps it interesting.
We selected comfortable sofas with clean lines, and added pops of color with throw pillows. See how the colors are picked up in the lamps and wall art. Notice the different textures in the room – the stone on the fireplace, the marble and brass tables, the warm wood TV console paired with the softness upholstery.
The beautiful patterned rug is the foundation for the seating area and ties all the colors together. The family room is the perfect place to watch TV or get cozy with a good book.
Since this room is the last one you see as you walk through the home, I wanted it to say “wow.” I knew painting it a bold color that is picked up from the rug and pillow fabrics would make a statement. Notice you see a bit of this color in the adjoining family room. Again, I used a variety of textures in this room – driftwood on the sofa, metal and wicker chairs, marble top coffee table, ceramic base lamps.
The sofa and chairs are actually made for outdoors but cozy for indoor seating as well. I wanted to use white drapes so you would immediately see the contrast on the walls. The rug is amazing with all of the colors. Notice how the geometric shape of the coffee table base mimics the pattern of the rug.
The gorgeous deep blue is Connor's Lakefront by Sherwin Williams.
While simple in design, it's perfect for family meals with kids. I selected an indoor/outdoor rug so cleaning up messes will be a breeze. The rug also helps ground the breakfast table and chairs and provides softness against the cold, hard tile. I chose to bring in some contrasting chairs to keep everything interesting and paired a black linear chandelier above it.
While each room has a style of its own, the rooms flow together well and speak to the personality of the family that lives here. That is my goal when creating a home for a busy family. My clients love their transitional style home that meets family friendly modern design. I hope you enjoyed the tour! Click on any image to see more of this home.
