When this girl was about to start middle school, it was time for a teen girl bedroom makeover. She was done with pink and purple walls, bedding and decor and wanted something not only more grown-up but very modern and simple. Her preferences are black, white and gold but also green.
Let’s have a look at the little girl’s room, shall we? It was so cute for her, but it was definitely time for a change. The first issue to address was storage. She didn’t want to keep the existing dresser in here because she wanted more floor space. The first project we tackled were built-in bookshelves and a bench. I don’t have progress photos from the building process, but here is a finished look.
We used two Billy bookcases from Ikea to build these, and my husband custom built the bench. We added molding and trim to everything to give it a more custom look. At this stage of the makeover we were testing paint colors. My teen wanted a light gray. I started with Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams. It’s a lovely light neutral gray, and I have it in my bathroom, but the blue undertones were coming through too much here. So, what do we do? I went back to the paint store to get a sample of Repose Gray at 50%! That is the trick, and that was perfect for her room! No more blue undertones.
Here is the original mood board that we created together. She requested a bigger bed in a very modern style, white bedding, gold accessories with a few touches of black. Next, we painted the room.
You can see how Repose Gray looks at 50% here. It’s very neutral, and we loved it! At this point, we had purchased the bed, bedding, a few throw pillows, a lamp, end table and mirror. We both fell in love with the gold sunburst mirror! Originally, we had a white chest of drawers in her room, but with a full size bed and built-ins it didn’t leave as much space for the chest, and she didn’t want her room to feel cramped. The solution was this bed from Ikea. It has drawers that pull out from the sides of the bed. Awesome!
The next step in the makeover was the bench cushion. I had this custom made with a dark gray, textured fabric, which adds some contrast to the light and bright room. These baskets are perfect for storage and add texture.
One of the finishing touches was this framed art. I bought the prints on Etsy, downloaded them to my computer, and had them printed at a local retailer. Then I found these floating frames at Michael’s. The black and white wording along with the thin, natural colored frames coordinate so well with the bed and modern feel to the room.
I decided to leave most of what my daughter had on her bookshelves and let more of her style show here. She is an avid reader and has many books. I bought a few accessories from Homegoods I thought she might like to style a few of the shelves.
By way, she loves her white comforter. It’s very soft and cozy, and it washes well!
The built in bench is one of her favorite things about the room. She loves to sit there to read or play her ukulele. Here are a few more photos to show you the details.
As requested, light, bright and modern! Thank you for letting me share this teen girl bedroom makeover with you!
